Who’s That Numpty?
How’s about ye? My name is Diane and I’m originally from God’s Own Country – otherwise known as Northern Ireland.
One day I was chatted up by a charming young chap who whisked me off to the sunbaked land of Australia, and here I’ve stayed. My husband David is brilliant, by the way.
So what’s going to be on my blog? Anything and everything, but mostly some of the following: food, God, language, food, humour, history, culture, food, nerdiness, food, church, creativity, music, food, fluff, randomness, friends, my cat. And did I mention food? I’ve been told (been accused?) that I sometimes look at things from a different angle than most people, and while I previously considered that to be a disadvantage, I’ve learned to embrace it as a particular ability and shiny facet to my character that is a gift from God.
I’m only starting to unwrap my dreams (and discover what they really are), so I’m hoping that by putting myself “out there” those dreams will increase in clarity; and that one day I’ll be able to share the fullfilment with you lot, my fellow numpties!
And what is a numpty? According to ABC NewsRadio, it is…
a good-humoured way of telling someone they lack common sense and make stupid mistakes. And, according to the Urban Dictionary website “numpty” is of Scottish origin. Apparently, if you make a real goose of yourself a Scot might tell you that you’re “daft” or that you’re “a big numpty”. According to one contributor to the site, “numpty” is short for “numb skull”. Apparently it’s a word Scottish football fans are inclined to use when catcalling from the terraces at players who’ve made a monumental stuff up. The contributors can’t seem to agree on whether “numpty” is meant to be a gentle rebuke or a savage put-down. So, you’ll have to decide for yourself how to use it – if you add it to your vocabulary.”
Why have I chosen it as the name of my blog? Well, I went with it on the back of these verses:
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things–and the things that are not–to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God–that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord. - 1 Corinthians 1:18, 25, 27-31
I think I can identify with that, so if that means that in the eyes of the world that I’m a bit of a numpty, I can live with that.
And if you can live with that too, you’re very welcome to my blog.
